• Before I begin today’s post, I wanted to thank those of you who have commented on previous posts. You have been so supportive and I am grateful. It is so much easier to keep writing when one knows one has an audience. So here we go…

Last week was a week of frustration, and I apologise for not posting, but you will soon see why. We moved into our house on 3 January amid worries that our furniture wouldn’t make it through Customs in time or the movers wouldn’t be able to coordinate with the shipper on such short notice. But all the stuff got to my house at about the same time the landlord and we got to the house. We did the walk-through and got the keys and by the time we were done, the movers were done too. Then I had a house full of boxes and things wrapped in moving blankets. But at least everything was finally in one place (except for our cars, of course).

The reason it’s been a week of frustration is because I don’t have internet at the house. And the reason I don’t have internet is due to a miscommunication. You see, for everything here, you need a Dutch bank account and a BSN. You simply cannot pay for anything without these things. We offered to pay the internet company for a year’s worth of service in cash, but they needed our State ID cards and our BSN (basically our Social Security numbers). Well, we don’t have those yet because in order to get them, you have to register with the municipality you live in. And we didn’t live there until the 3rd. Plus, in order to register, you have to have Residency and we are waiting for our Residency docs to come through.

The good news is that I know have my temporary Residency, so I went to the town hall and applied for my BSN. That was on Friday and I’m still waiting. I could get the papers in the mail today. Then I’ll have a bank account.

The big problem is that Bob hasn’t gotten his Residency paperwork yet so he can’t register. And the cars, the lease, the utilities all have his name on them first.

Add to this the fact that a lot of business services, like shipping companies and printer supply places, don’t sell to the public. You have to show them your business license. And while we have a business contract all ready to go, we can’t register a business until WE are registered (aka have a BSN).

The good thing about this is that I have been going to the local café every day, sometimes twice a day, and using their internet. The waitstaff thought they’d play a joke on me and only speak to me in Dutch and not give me the English menus. But I rallied and struggled to answer them in my paltry Dutch, and now I’m a hero. =) They’re really sweet people and they teach me new words every time I go there (which, of course, is a lot).

We’re finally printing and shipping orders. But everything is harder when you don’t have internet where your printers are. And when you have to go to the postal package drop-off and wait in line rather than have them pick up at your house. But it’ll get better. At least orders are finally shipping.

I’m just thrilled to death to have my Residency stickers. I am no longer a tourist! The café staff bought me a cappuccino to celebrate.

In other news, I’m working out with my trainer every Monday. Last week, I felt crippled on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This week I swear I worked my legs harder, but it’s Wednesday and I’m not impaired yet. Yoga this morning and maybe a swim tonight.

And… comedy! I finally (after four emails!) got the guy from the English Comedy Night in Eindhoven to respond. He now forgets that he promised me five minutes and insists he can only give me three. But I’ll cut down my set and it’ll be fine. And I’m supposed to bring 10 paying friends to “pay” for my time. Not really a problem. But annoying. If you’re anywhere near Eindhoven next Wednesday and want to come, early bird tickets are only €10 until midnight tonight: https://billetto.nl/en/e/online-tickets-season-premiere-of-eindhoven-english-comedy-night-at-the-hub-jan-23-tickets-328549

See? My name is on the announcement!

If you want to see a sample of my comedy, there are a couple of videos on this site you can watch. Just go to “Videos” in the top navigation.

So that’s about all the news that’s fit to print for this week. Thanks for reading!

I sympathize with your move. So glad to hear the coffee shop was a good refuge. I have been waiting for the stays pattern before I start my Regency dress. I saw it was coming yesterday. Thank you for persevering. Now I can’t wait to hear your comedy.

In this chapter reconstructions history Guide to the planet Our Heroes find both their towels and the bureaucracy of the Vogon Empire. Armed with towels, cappuccino, and poultry Dutch, they work their way through the system collecting stamps that may someday give them the validation BSN and grant them freedom of purchase within the empire and freely flowing internet so that they're will be more puppy pictures, because the purpose of the internet must be fulfilled, yes, it must, our precious.
